About the Mucuchíes
The Mucuchíes comes from the high Andes of Mérida state in Venezuela and takes its name from the town of Mucuchíes. It descends from guardian and herding dogs brought by Spanish settlers and adapted to cold mountain pastures, where it protected sheep and farms. Venezuela declared it the national dog, and it is linked to Nevado, the dog that accompanied Simón Bolívar. It is recognised by the Venezuelan kennel federation but not by the FCI or AKC. It is calm, loyal and protective of family and flock, and suspicious of strangers.
How to recognise a Mucuchíes
- Large, sturdy and well muscled, slightly longer than tall, with strong bone.
- Dense, semi-long, flat or slightly wavy coat, thicker around the neck, with feathering on the legs and a plumed tail.
- White base coat with patches of cream, honey, grey or black, most often on the head and ears.
- Broad head with a moderate stop and a slightly tapering muzzle; medium drop ears hanging close to the cheeks.
- Dark brown, almond-shaped eyes; tail carried low at rest and raised in a gentle curve when alert.
Photo tip. Show the whole dog from the side with the head turned slightly toward you: drop ears, coloured patches on the head and the feathered tail set it apart from white shepherds.
Mucuchíes or look-alike?
Great Pyrenees
The Great Pyrenees is larger and heavier, usually all white or with faint badger markings, and has double dewclaws on the hind legs. Clear honey or black patches point toward a Mucuchíes.
Saint Bernard
A Saint Bernard has a massive head, a deep stop and red-and-white markings with a dark mask. The Mucuchíes is lighter, with a narrower head and no mask.
White Swiss Shepherd
Both can be large and white, but the White Swiss Shepherd has tall, erect ears and a wedge-shaped shepherd head. Drop ears and a broader skull indicate a Mucuchíes.
Mucuchíes mixes
Outside Venezuela the Mucuchíes is rare, and at home many rural dogs are crosses of the old type with German Shepherds, Labradors and other breeds. In a mix, the white coat with coloured patches, the drop ears and the protective temperament usually show through. Because the breed is little known, a photo of a Mucuchíes cross may come back as Mucuchies alongside larger guardian or shepherd breeds, or look like a Golden or Labrador mix. A DNA test gives percentages where reference data exist.
Health and care
- Few health studies exist for this breed. As with other large dogs, hip and elbow dysplasia are worth screening for; ask for scores on both parents.
- Keep a growing puppy lean and avoid forced exercise on hard ground while its joints develop.
- The dense coat sheds and catches burrs: brush twice a week, more during the moult, and check ears and feet after outings.
- A guardian at heart: early socialisation with visitors and other dogs, plus space and long daily walks, keeps it calm and confident.
- Bred for cool mountain air, it copes poorly with heat. Give shade and water, and walk early or late in hot weather.
